The slogan, "They Shall Not Pass" was a reference to the determination of republicans and their sympathizers to halt the advance of the combined forces of Franco, Hitler, and Mussolini. The militant slogan of "No Pasaran" was taken up around the world as an expression of solidarity with the people of Spain.
