"SABRA"
Mark Vallen 1982/2002
Silk-screen - 22" x 30"

Vallen originally created this print in 1982 as a commemoration to the 1,500 innocent civilians who were massacred in the Palestinian refugee camp of Sabra during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon. In 2002 Vallen worked with master printer Richard Duardo and his Modern Multiples Studio of Los Angeles, to reprint this Serigraph (Silk-screen Print).

The work is a portrait of a Palestinian wearing traditional Arab headdress (kaffiya). Here's what the artist had to say about his piece, "Simple minded people have accused me of creating a 'hateful' poster that condones terrorism. How a portrait of an unarmed Palestinian civilian in traditional garb - an image without text, can be construed as an endorsement of violence escapes me. I oppose all forms of terror."
