Artist's
statement: "I
created the above artwork in the same way I approach such
drawings today. Using pencils that range in hardness from
very soft to extremely hard, I'll build up layers of graphite
and then use a workable spray fixative to "set"
the drawing before moving to softer pencils.
Working
on heavy illustration board with a moderately smooth surface,
I'll start my drawing with the hardest pencils... which
give light silvery grays. I'll work with the hard pencils
until the drawing seems nearly finished in terms of blocking
in forms and details. Only then do I move to a softer
pencil, reworking areas and deepening the tones. In the
final stage of the drawing I use the softest pencils,
which give the deepest blacks. I then finish the work
with a final coat of spray fix. My
drawing was self published as a flyer in 1988 and distributed
across Los Angeles. The image was combined with text describing
the situation in Guatemala. A total of 5,000 flyers were
distributed."
