Vallen 1989 Chalk pastel 3 1/2' x 5'
Artist's
statement: "Today, some years after the end of
Guatemala's devastating civil war, it has been revealed
that over 100,000 civilians... most of them Maya Indians,
perished in the Guatemalan government army's fanatical
anti-communist blood bath. Guatemalan church and human
rights organizations have not only confirmed the terrible
death toll, but have criticized the US government
for having trained and armed the Guatemalan army and
police.
This
large chalk pastel drawing was created on a single
sheet of German etching paper mounted on foamcore.
I first created a light preliminary sketch directly
on the paper with a soft pencil. That sketch was sprayed
with a fixative before proceeding with the color drawing.
I then worked up the outlines monochromatically using
various browns. Finally I blocked in the main colors,
paying attention to color hues and sharpness of details.
I used nothing but soft Sennelier chalk pastel in
creating my drawing. For the finer details I would
sharpen the chalk stick to a point or fine edge. On
occasion I would blend areas with a small rag. After
each work session the drawing was sprayed with a workable
fixative."
