Call For Artists: "Workers of the World"

From July through August, of 2004, the A Shenere Velt Gallery in West Hollywood California presented a retrospective of my works entitled, More Than A Witness. My exhibit was comprised of over forty paintings, prints, and drawings, and what helped to make the show so successful was the wonderful people behind the gallery. A Shenere Velt means "a more beautiful world" in Yiddish, and the gallery is part of The Workmen's Circle/Arbeter Ring, a social organization dedicated to Jewish culture and social justice that has been active in Southern California since 1908. While I’m not Jewish, the altruistic gallery staff welcomed me with open arms, as they are receptive to exhibiting the works of any artist with a commitment to social justice. I just received the following Call For Artists from the gallery, and thought to post it to my web log.

"A Shenere Velt Gallery of the Workmen's Circle/Arbeter Ring, Southern California District, has issued a Call for Artists to participate in a juried exhibition entitled "Workers of the World." It will be on display November 6 through December 30, 2005, in the Gallery, 1525 S. Robertson Blvd., Los Angeles, California. The deadline for submission of materials is September 2, 2005. Jurors are Sheila Pinkel -artist and curator, Carol Wells -director and curator of the Center for the Study of Political Graphics, Paul Von Blum -author and professor of art history at UCLA. Artists are asked to submit slides of up to three wall-hung works in any media, including video but not ceramics and jewelry, which address the theme of "Workers of the World." From struggles to survive to labors of love, people are at work every day around the world. Pieces chosen for this show will reflect on the physical, political, emotional and spiritual experiences of the world's workers. Any artist wishing to obtain a copy of the prospectus for the show may download it from www.circlesocal.org. Or write to A Shenere Velt Gallery, 1525 S. Robertson Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90035-4231 and enclose a business-size self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE). You can also phone (310) 552-2007."
